The Great Garden Trail of Dorset — showcasing the very best in English garden design, planting and history.
World famous for its camellia groves and magnolias and with its own micro climate, Abbotsbury Sub Tropical Gardens cover more than 30 acres and has a plant collection of over 6,000 species from around the world. Highlights include the Mediterranean bank and lily ponds, the Burma Rope Bridge and stunning views of the Jurassic Coast.
Situated close to Dorchester, Athelhampton was built in 1485 and is one of England’s finest manor houses. The surrounding five acres of formal gardens were created in 1891, with ponds, fountains, a variety of plants and the world-famous yew pyramids. Don’t miss the Edwardian kitchen garden which provides fresh produce for the restaurant.
Discover Mapperton House and Garden, a hidden gem and winner of the 2020 Historic Houses Garden of the Year award. Visitors can enjoy the fountains, herbaceous borders, bold topiary, orangery, statues and grottoes. There are three estate walks in 1,900 acres, which includes the rewilding area that can be explored on a guided tour.
Minterne Gardens is a haven of tranquility. Be enchanted by the unique collection of Himalayan rhododendrons and azaleas, cherries, maples and many fine and rare trees. With small lakes, waterfalls and streams, Minterne’s 20-acre woodland garden is laid out in a horseshoe over the course of a mile, creating a breathtaking landscape.
Said to be Dorset’s best kept secret is Sherborne Castle and Gardens. Grade 1 listed and designed by Capability Brown, the landscaped gardens have magnificent herbaceous borders, whilst specimen trees surround a 50-acre lake. Paths and trails lead you through the 42 acres of gardens. Then soak up 400 years of history at the Castle.
